Now it’s official: Xbox is moving out of the living room and straight into your hands. Microsoft has today announced their first handheld gaming devices – ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X – developed in collaboration with ASUS and set for release at the end of 2025. And no, this isn’t just another Windows-based Steam Deck clone – this is Xbox’s take on a true portable console experience.

Two models: One for casuals, one for the hungry

Both models feature a 7-inch 1080p touchscreen (120Hz and FreeSync Premium included), but the internals differ. The standard ROG Xbox Ally is equipped with AMD’s Ryzen Z2 A chip, 16 GB RAM, and a 512 GB SSD. It targets 720p gaming but can technically output 1080p. It’s intended as an entry-level machine with a solid 60Wh battery and two USB 3.2 Type-C ports.

ROG Xbox Ally X, on the other hand, comes with AMD’s Ryzen Z2 Extreme, 24 GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD – a significant upgrade. It features a larger 80Wh battery and a faster USB 4 port. Both models also have a microSD slot, allowing you to expand storage without selling your PlayStation.

Windows… with Xbox heart

It’s still technically a Windows machine, but with a significant difference: the new Xbox handheld launches directly into a custom Xbox UI designed for handheld gaming. No desktop, no mouse cursor – just games. This also means the system utilizes the hardware more efficiently, as many of Windows’ background processes are stripped away. More RAM and CPU power for your games? Yes, please.

Console comfort and controls

The design draws clear inspiration from the Xbox Wireless Controller – contoured grips and ergonomics promise all-day comfort. It seems Microsoft has been hands-on with the details, and with ASUS as the hardware partner, it looks set to be a solid competitor to both the Steam Deck and Switch.
